What is a Resumé?

A resumé is a sheet that summarizes and emphasizes your education, academic honors, extracurricular activities, sports participation, work experience, volunteer experience and special skills.


Why is a Resumé important?

Your resumé is a portrait of yourself. It should grab the employers attention and convince him or her in 30 seconds or less that you should be interviewed. It is essential that your resumé emphasizes what makes you unique. This includes, but isn't limited to, your skills, interests and accomplishments.

Resumé Do's

  • Sell yourself by highlighting the skills and experience most relevant to the position you're seeking.
  • Be brief and concise. Include important accomplishments in a few words as possible.
  • Use bullets and action words to highlight marketable skills.
  • Keep your verb tenses and format consistent.
  • Check your grammer and spelling carefully.
  • Try to fit your resumé on one page.
  • Ensure that your resumé is neat and visually appealing.
  • Leave an appropriate amount of margin space on all sides of your resumé
  • Have a parent or teacher review it.

Resumé Don'ts

  • Use the personal pronoun "I".
  • Falsify any information on a resumé
  • Abbreviate, if avoidable.
  • Include highly detailed information; save it for the interview.
  • Have any typographical or grammatical errors.
  • Forget to include any unique talents, skills, experiences and accomplishments.
  • Rely soley on spell check. Remember to double check your work.
